Poggioreale
Small agricultural center, population about 2,000, located in the Belice Valley.
Founded in 1642 by Marquis Morso Naselli, it suffered, as did the entire area, the tremendous earthquake that violently struck the Belice Valley in ’68 and almost totally destroyed the town.
The new center was built not far from the previous one, on the hill of the old baglio of the Middle Mandria.
The new town is spread over three overlapping terraces, each of which provides a residential core arranged around a square. In this way, it is possible to enjoy the beautiful view of the hills, vineyards and the river that gives the valley its name.
The main square is Elimo Square, graced by the clock tower.
A monument to the Earthquake Victims was erected in memory of the tragic event.
As in other towns in the area, the cult of St. Joseph in whose honor every year, on March 18 and 19, altars are prepared enriched with traditional folk foods and especially “squartucciati,” pastries made of dough and figs.
