Campobello di Mazara
The town of Campobello di Mazara stands on a beautiful flat area.
It is a predominantly agricultural center. Very large areas of its territory are cultivated with olive trees.
Sight to see – The oldest settlement dates back to the 15th c. One of the most outstanding monuments is the church of Maria SS. delle Grazie from the late 1500s.
The single-nave church has 4 interior chapels in one of which an interesting Crucifix is preserved.
To taste – A special note goes, first of all, to the Nocellara del Belice: an excellent quality of olive that is perfectly suited for both oil production and consumption. Then you cannot leave without having tried the black bread, which comes from a particular synthesis of two types of wheat grown in the area of Castelvetrano and Campobello di Mazara.
At one time, tuna fishing was also practiced. Even today, in the summer, lampara fishing is practiced to catch cuttlefish and octopus.
The Caves of Cusa – Not far from the city are the Caves of Cusa, the natural quarries from which the Selenuntines drew the material with which to build their splendid city. Selinunte’s demands for tufa were always considerable, and work here was continuous and intense. Production was interrupted when the Carthaginians destroyed Selinunte.
Beaches – Near the town, there are two resorts: Tre Fontane and Torretta Granitola. The latter, thanks to its natural inlet, has experienced a flourishing fishing activity that unfortunately, with the passage of time, has struggled more and more to survive.
