The cult of Our Lady of Custonaci<\/strong> has been, since the late 16th century, one of the most popular and heartfelt in the entire Erice countryside.
It is said that a ship bearing a painting of Our Lady had miraculously found escape from a storm<\/em> near Cala Burguto<\/strong>, in Cornino<\/strong>, and that this prompted the sailors to erect a place of worship here in honor of what has since been called Our Lady of Custonaci and who today is both the patron saint of Custonaci and of Erice and Valderice.<\/p>\n

Festivities in her honor begin, every year, in the week before the last Wednesday of August.<\/strong>
On Monday, after sunset, the“landing of the Madonna<\/strong>” is re-enacted: the arrival from the sea, at the bay of Cala Buguto, of the 16th-century table with the sacred depiction.
The boat carrying the painting is joined by several other fishing boats, so as to create a sort of procession at sea.<\/strong>
Once the landing has taken place, fireworks mark the beginning of the procession ashore: the Sacred Image, placed on a float, is carried on the shoulders to the shrine dedicated to Her. The festivities finally conclude on Wednesday with the procession of<\/strong> Our Lady through the streets of the city<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The cult of Our Lady of Custonaci, as well as throughout the Agroericino area, is very much felt in Erice vetta<\/strong>.
