The name refers to the domination of the <strong>Romans<\/strong> who made it a &#8220;<em>castrum veteranorum<\/em>,&#8221; a citadel of veterans. \n\n<strong>Must-see<\/strong> &#8211; The historic center and most of its monuments gravitate around the two main squares: <strong>Piazza Umberto I<\/strong> and <strong>Piazza Garibaldi<\/strong>. The latter is surrounded by several notable buildings, including the<strong> Mother Church<\/strong>, dating from 1520, and the <strong>Church of Purgatory<\/strong> with its rich facade dating from the mid-1600s. \n\nNext to it is the 19th-century &#8220;<strong>Selinus<\/strong>&#8221; theater, which still retains the original curtain.\n<strong>Umberto I Square<\/strong>, adorned by the <strong>Nymph Fountain<\/strong>, opens to the left of the church and also allows its bell tower to be discovered. Not far away, however, in <strong>Regina Margherita<\/strong> Square, the bare facade of the <strong>Church of St. Dominic<\/strong> conceals a far richer interior. \n\nThe <strong>Civic Museum<\/strong> houses a collection of artifacts from <strong>Selinunte<\/strong>, including <strong>the Selinuntine Ephebe<\/strong>: a bronze statue from the fifth century B.C. found in Selinunte.\n\nSeparated from the town, the <strong>Church of the Holy Trinity in Delia<\/strong> is a fine example of Arab-Norman architecture. The square-plan interior has a central dome supported by four columns. \n\nNot far away, between <strong>Marinella di Selinunte<\/strong> and <strong>Porto Palo<\/strong>, lies the fascinating <u><strong>Belice River Mouth Oriented Nature Reserve.<\/strong>\n<\/u>\n<strong>Events<\/strong> &#8211; If you are in the area on <u>Easter morning<\/u> you might take the opportunity to <em>attend <\/em>the<strong>Aurora<\/strong><em>,<\/em> the traditional rite celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. The focal moment is the meeting between the <strong>simulacrum of Christ<\/strong> and that of <strong>Mary<\/strong> carried on the shoulders. \n\nInitially, the statue of Our Lady is covered with a black cloak as a sign of mourning. A simulacrum representing the Angel approaches Our Lady three times, accompanied by three trumpet blasts.
