Later conquered by the <strong>Normans<\/strong>, it became part of the royal domain. \n\nIn the first half of the 1800s, the <strong>city<\/strong> took part in Sicilian insurrectionary attempts against the bitter Bourbon government, and in 1860 it was the scene of the bitter battle between <strong>Garibaldi&#8217;s Thousand<\/strong> and the<strong> Bourbons<\/strong> that kicked off the liberation of Sicily.\n\n<strong>Churches-Built<\/strong> in the 15th century, the <strong>Mother Church<\/strong> is <u>one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the city<\/u>.\nThe Renaissance origin of the facade has been obscured by later interventions. The interior, three naves supported by columns, preserves several stuccoes and an interesting marble polyptych from the early 1500s. \n\nThe 18th-century<strong> Church of the Most Holy Crucifix<\/strong> is also beautiful.
