In Trapani during the 16th century men worked in the hot summer sun to collect salt.The port buzzed with activity and the traditional ‘schifazzi’ boats weaved through the canals of the salt pans.They transported thousands of tons of ‘white gold’ to the ships that would then complete the onward journey towards the continent. From the early 1900s, Angelo Culcasi was one of the many Trapanese men who worked the salt pans.His sons Alberto, Carmelo and Salvatore, and eventually also their children, have worked and lived on the salt pans of Trapani and Paceco. For four generations, the Culcasi’s have been ‘The Salt Family’ and during this time they have helped create initiatives linked to the area where they have been firmly rooted.As their work lives on, it continues to show a great respect and harmony for the prestigious nautical importance of the area.
