The town - Partanna

Partanna is located in the valley between Modione and Belice rivers, on a hill a little higher than 400 mt above sea level. In 1968 the town was struck by Belice earthquake and many buildings were destroyed or damaged.

To be seen - What you are more struck by is the Castle of Grifeos (or Graffeos), the rich and important Sicilian family that has been continuously ruling over the feud of Partanna since the end of the year 1000 till the XXI century. Built in the XIV century, it has a fine face decorated by merlons.

The Matrice nuova (New Mother Church), built between 1500 and 1600, has been recently restored because of the earthquake. Also interesting are the Church of St Rocco, which inner is rich of valuable stuccos, pictures and frescos, and the Cloister of San Benedetto.

Along the provincial road, that from Castelvetrano goes to Partanna, you meet the Torre Biggini (Biggini Tower), built in medieval age in a zone of remarkable interest also from an archaeological point of view. Here, in fact, the excavations brought to light some prehistoric age graves and a “trepanned skull”, today preserved in the Salinas Museum of Palermo. The finding is a significant evidence of surgery on patients with cranial traumas, already in the Bronze Age. The finds recovered during the excavations are kept in the Prehistory Museum of Partanna.

To be tasted - The economy of Partanna is above all founded on agriculture and on olive cultivation: in fact this is the area where is cultivated the Nocellara of Belice. Besides, in Partanna, as in all the communes of the Belice valley, also the cheeses are excellent. Very famous is the Vastedda of Belice, an exquisite spun paste cheese of sheet rewarded with the Denominazione d’Origine Protetta (Protected Denomination of Origin).
