The town - Poggioreale
Poggioreale is a small rural centre, of about 2000 inhabitants, situated in the Belice Valley. Founded in 1642 by the marquis Morso Naselli, it suffered, like the whole area, the terrible earthquake that violently struck the Belice valley in 1968 and that almost totally destroyed the town. The new centre was constructed a little way out of the former, on the hill of the old baglio of the Mandria di Mezzo. The new town places itself on three superimposed terraces, each of them foresees a residential nucleus disposed around a square. In this way, it is possible to enjoy a fine view to the hills, to the vineyards and to the river that gives the name to the valley. The main square is Elimo Square, embellished by the clock tower. In memory of the tragic event it was built a monument to the Victim of the Earthquake. Like in other towns of the area, it is much felt the worship of San Giuseppe (St. Joseph) in whose honour every year, the 18th and the 19th of March, they prepares some altars enriched with the typical food of the popular tradition and, above all, with the “squartucciati”, paste and figs sweets.
