The town - Salaparuta
Salaparuta is a very small urban centre situated on a slope at 200 mt above sea level. The first news about it dates back to 1100 B.C. but only about XVI century it saw a moderate demographic and town-planning increase. The economy of Salaparuta is based on agricultural activity. Since 2006 here it is produced the red and white Salaparuta D.O.C. The most important monument is the Mother Church where is preserved the fifteenth-century statue representing Santa Caterina (St Catherine). On the morning of Easter Sunday it occurs l’ncuntru (the Meeting), or the sacred representation of the reunion between the Madonna and the Christ resurrected. A child plays the character of the Archangel Michael announcing Mary the Resurrection of Her Son. Only at this point, in a joyous atmosphere, the simulacrums of Christ and of the Madonna are approached one to another.
