Alcamo: to see

Alcamo is full of churches. Most of them are fine examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture that preserve valuable sculptures, paintings, stucco work, and frescoes inside.

Of particular note is the Basilica of Maria SS. Assunta, which dominates the city’s main square. Built in 1332, it was enlarged and modified several times to reach its present appearance only in the 18th century. The Latin cross plan is divided into three naves, separated by columns of red marble extracted from Mount Bonifato. Inside are preserved Flemish paintings by Borremans and some works by Antonello Gangini.

Alcamo ‘s most flourishing period is evidenced by the majestic Castle of the Counts of Modica. It was built in the mid-1400s at the behest of the Clare family. It passed under different owners until the Caprera family, Counts of Modica, after whom it was named. It has a rhomboidal plan and the perimeter marked by 4 towers, two cylindrical and two quadrangular towers that alternate. Beautiful mullioned and trefoil windows in Gothic-Catalan style.

A few kilometers from the city, on a rocky plateau, the Castle of Calatubo, attested since the end of the year 1000, is clearly visible. Around the sturdy fortress probably lived a community that abandoned the village during Frederick II’s war against the Arabs. Used for various purposes over the centuries, it has come to the present in good condition.
