The cave of the Genoese - Levanzo

The Cave of the Genoese in Levanzo keeps inside a treasure of invaluable historical and artistic value.

In a hidden ravine, wide more than 8 meters, there are several graffiti and paintings on the walls.

At the bottom of the wall there are graffitos dating back to the end of the Upper Palaeolithic period: mostly animals (horses, cattle and deer) and very few people. Subjects are drawn in profile, with only one stroke, and in a very naturalistic style.

The paintings at the top of the wall instead dates back to the final stage of the Neolithic. They represent threadlike stylized black bodies but among them there are also a tuna and a dolphin: the first drawings of fishes throughout all the Europe. In the same cave a lot of crockery and flint knives where found.

The Cave of the Genoese can be visited throughout all the year. It is about 5 kilometres far from the town. The entrance is a small balcony overlooking the sea.

You can visit the cave contacting the guide and making a reservation earlier. So you can get to the cave with a jeep, together with the guide. In summer you can get there by boat and round the island as well.
