Pianto Romano - Calatafimi
In the first half of the nineteenth century the city was involved in the insurrectionary movement against the Bourbons. There, in 1860 Garibaldi’s Thousand fought against the Bourbons and so the liberation of Sicily started. 32 years later in Pianto Romano a memorial to the war dead was built. The architect of this very impressive and simple at the same time monument is Basile. On the square base with a Doric frame there is a high obelisk. A bronze crown recalls the adventure of Garibaldi’s Thousand since they landed in Marsala until the Battle of Calatafimi. Inside the memorial to the war dead, supported by a cross vault, there are the relics.
