Calatafimi: the Roman Cry
To those who fought together with Garibaldi and sacrificed their lives, Calatafimi dedicated the Roman Mourning.
In the first half of the 19th century, Calatafimi took part in the insurrectional attempts of Sicilians against the bitter Bourbon government and, in 1860, was the scene of the bitter battle between Garibaldi’s Thousand and the Bourbons that began the liberation of Sicily.
In memory of the fallen, 32 years later, the Pianto Romano ossuary was erected.
The monument, imposing in its simplicity, is the work of the architect Basile.
The square base, decorated with a Doric cornice, is surmounted by a tall obelisk. A bronze crown commemorates the adventure of the Thousand, from the landing at Marsala to the battle of Calatafimi.
Inside, the shrine, supported by a cross vault, houses the relics.
