Holy Thursday in Marsala
The Holy Thursday Procession re-enacts the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ every year. On this occasion, some citizens of Marsala interpret the different characters and highlights told in the Gospel. The scenes begin with the depiction of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and end with the Resurrection, creating a long procession that, throughout the afternoon of Maundy Thursday, parades through the streets of the historic center. The costumes used during the Procession are preserved and can be seen in a special section of the Civic Museum, located inside the San Pietro Monumental Complex. The Good Friday Procession is less spectacular, less noisy but more heartfelt. It is composed exclusively of devotees who parade through the city streets following a simulacrum of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Dead Christ. There are so many participants that, every year, the Procession becomes very long: entire kilometers of praying faithful. The statue of Our Lady of Sorrows leaves the Mother Church, in Republic Square, to return late at night to theshrine dedicated to Her where the faithful, in small groups, then stop for a final prayer. |
