Torre di Ligny è certamente e uno dei luoghi simbolo di Trapani, ricco di storia e di significato. Un monumento che trasmette il legame della città con il mare. si erge sugli scogli nell’estrema punta occidentale della città, in una posizione strategica sul mare. edificata 1671 mentre la Sicilia era sotto il dominio spagnolo per volere del principe Claude Lamoral di Ligne, capitano generale e viceré del Regno di Sicilia, mentre l’isola era sotto il dominio spagnolo. al fine di avvistare le navi dei corsari barbareschi e proteggere la città e il territorio.
Costruita su progetto di Carlos De Grunembergh. La torre quadrangolare, che si restringe verso l’alto, fu munita di quattro garitte in muratura e anticamente provvista di fanali.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale fu usata dalla dalla marina militare come postazione antiaerea.
dalla terrazza si può ammirare un panorama unico e se si gira intorno alla torre e si guarda indietro si vede la città con la sua forma curvilinea e il monte Erice, mentre se si guarda in avanti appaiono nelle isole di Favignana e di Levanzo
al suo interno ospita un museo civico
The Ligny Tower is certainly one of Trapani’s iconic landmarks, rich in history and significance. A monument that conveys the city’s connection to the sea, it stands on the rocks at the westernmost tip of the city, in a strategic position overlooking the sea. Built in 1671 while Sicily was under Spanish rule, it was commissioned by Prince Claude Lamoral de Ligne, Captain General and Viceroy of the Kingdom of Sicily, to spot the ships of the Barbary pirates and protect the city and its territory.
Built to a design by Carlos De Grunembergh, the quadrangular tower, which tapers towards the top, was equipped with four masonry sentry boxes and originally had lanterns.
During World War II, it was used by the Italian Navy as an anti-aircraft emplacement.
From the terrace, you can admire a unique panorama. If you walk around the tower and look back, you can see the city with its curved shape and Mount Erice, while if you look forward, the islands of Favignana and Levanzo appear.
It houses a civic museum.
